“The Cylons were created by man. They evolved. They rebelled. There are many copies. And they have a plan.”

Unfortunately we don’t.

Welcome to Todd S. Horowitz and InvaderGabe’s tag-teams reviews of the Re-imagined Battlestar Galactica! Follow along as the former revisits and the latter experiences for the first(ish) time one of the few truly successful reboots of a beloved sci-fi property. Hopefully that interaction will bring to light some interesting reflections.

[Battlestar Galactica can be streamed on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Streaming Video. Watch a fan-made, spoiler-free trailer on YouTube.]

If you’re interested in some context about the reviewers and their approach (most likely you’re not), keep reading after the jump!

Gabe: As a long time fan of all things Star Trek, my interest was piqued by the new BSG even before I knew it hailed from one of the people responsible for what many (including myself) consider the best iteration of the franchise. However, living in Argentina in the time just before the widespread availability of broadband and HDTV torrents, meant waiting for it to appear on cable television, hoping it wasn’t more than 6 months later than the US, never knowing about seasons or cancellations, and so forth.

And in this particular case, the worst thing happened: after hearing the announcements for weeks, I sit down to watch the premiere and find an incomprehensible story, with barely a prologue, and cannot make heads or tails of it. I became so enraged that I quit the series right then and there. It would be years until I found that evidently they either neglected to air the pilot miniseries, or didn’t publicize it enough, and after a friend insisted that in spite of a controversial finale the series was quite good, and learning that it was the product of DS9’s own Ronald D. Moore (a man I came to admire all the more reading the transcripts of the chats he had with fans during his time in Star Trek) I decided to take the plunge and watch the damn thing. I recently began to watch it but only got to the middle of the second season before starting this, so I will refresh a bit on the first season (keeping the whole thing spoiler free) and eventually get to the really new stuff.
